Reduce waste
Bottled water...
Do you need to buy bottled water? If you are not comfortable drinking water from the tap, consider boiling the water and decanting it into bottles which can be reused.
Drinking straws...
When ordering in cafes and restaurants here, you are likely to be automatically served with a straw. Pre-empt this when you order by requesting 'sans paille' /sor pye/ in French.
Disposable bags...
Even though Morocco has almost eliminated plastic bags, the biodegradable bags you are given with purchases may still not be necessary. Take reusable bags with you when you shop, including light-weight ones for fruit/ vegetables. Try to cut down on plastic use by choosing paper bags in supermarkets and reusing them whenever possible.
Fruit juice...
Instead of buying imported fruit juice in the shops, consider taking an old bottle to one of the stalls offering freshly squeezed juice in the medina and asking them to fill it for you
Dry goods like pasta, biscuits, flour, nuts, dried fruit, spices, cat food and dog food...
Instead of buying these pre-packaged in plastic, shop in the markets to get the amount you need poured out in bulk in a paper bag (or cone of old photocopying paper!). Reuse old glass jars at home to store them in.
As an alternative to dog food...
Consider getting offal free or cheap from local butchers
Detergents...
are sold in many of the shops along the market decanted from bulk into reused water bottles.
Plastic-free deodorant...
is sold (along with many other lovely products) at Chez Beldi Shop by the CTM bus office in the new town.
